Would you like to eat some Penn and Teller?

Snippet of our conversation as we were making dinner...

Him: Do you like Penn and Teller?
Me: Yeah, I guess it's okay.
Him: You don't like Penn and Teller?
Me: Yeah, it's okay but I prefer just to eat bread and butter.
Him: What? No silly, they're Magicians!
Me: Oh, I wondered why you were suddenly asking if I like Nuttela!

Obviously I was hungry?

The other day, whilst I was looking at an article about Oprah Winfrey in Australia...

Me: ...*clicking and reading an article*
Him: Is that Ernie Dingo?
Me:.... Bwahahaha

... To be fair... Yes. I could see the resemblance!

Shirred Dress Tutorial

I'm pretty excited to put up my first tutorial! I wanted to make something to share that is very easy to make, as well as being irreisitably cute.
The design of the garment is pretty much for young girls, however by altering the length of material used, it is very easy to make one for yourself even!

Please don't be put off by the idea of shirring, as it is much easier than it looks and even more so, rewarding! Being my first tutorial, I'm hoping that I took enough pictures. However, if you are not certain about a particular instruction, let me know!

Okay, here goes....

You will need:
1 metre of Fabric
Cotton Thread
Elastic Thread
Scissors

Start off with your length of fabric. This tutorial uses 1 metre of fabric. If you vary the length of the fabric you can make a larger or smaller size. I used my cutting board and ruler to determine the length of the finished dress. Don't forget to factor in a seam allowance! My dress is 47.5cms, or 19ins, and the seam allowance is 3cms (1.5 cm at the top and the bottom).

Press your seam allowance in the fabric by folding up 1.5cms and pressing along the length, and then a further 1.5cms again, to enclose the raw edge of the fabric.

When choosing the colour of the thread that you use, a really neat trick to match the shade is to unravel a small section of thread and hold it up against the fabric. It helps you to see a lot easier too see if it will 'disappear' into the fabric!

Sew down the hem at the top and bottom of your fabric. Sew as close as possible to the turned under edge to ensure the hem will lie as flat as possible. When sewing, use a medium-length stitch. You don't need it too long for the hems, I set my machine to a stitch length of 3.

For the next part, I don't have a picture detailing, but for your shirring, you will need to change your bobbin from regular thread, to elastic thread. It is most useful to use multiple bobbins, so you don't need to mess around with winding/unwinding one! To thread your elastic thread onto the bobbin, you will need to do it by hand. Don't cause the elastic to stretch out as you wind, but rather keep it without tension. Place your bobbin into your machine as you usually would, and set your stitch length to it's longest (mine was at 4).
Starting at the top left of the fabric length, don't forget to sew a few backstitches before you sew down the entire length. This will ensure that your elastic will not come loose. Use markings on your sewing machine foot to help guide you with keeping the distance between each row of stitches consistent. Here, I've used the line where the plastic and the metal parts meet. When you get to the end of the row, again don't forget to backstitch to secure the elastic!!

This is what you will start to see after you've done your first row.

Continue doing rows for the bodice of the dress. On my completed garment, I completed 10 rows of shirring which I decided that was enough. You can do more or even less if you choose too. As I progressed with my shirring rows, I used the distance between the needle and the right of the foot to keep my rows a consisent distance apart. However, don't fret if you aren't completely straight! It won't be so noticeable in the completed garment (phew!).

As you sew, stretch out the fabric with your hands as you go -- don't just allow it to stay gathered up. This will make for a much neater final appearance. An important thing to remember is that you are not forcing the fabric through, but rather guiding it.

Once you've completed your rows of stitching, it is time to switch back to your regular threaded bobbin (you're finished with the elastic now!) and sew up your back seam. Pin the right sides of the fabric together, and sew with the medium stitch length you used when doing the hems. I have used a wider seam allowance here, to ensure that my ends of the elastic are secured within the seam. You can adjust yours accordingly to ensure the same is true for yourself.

Press your seam allowance open, and finish in your way of choosing. You can leave the edges raw if the fabric will allow; otherwise I would recommend doing a French seam, or using an overlocker.

Next up is the straps! You can omit the following steps if you choose to make a strapless garment. Cut your fabric into strips 5cms wide, the length is up to you as to how long you wish them to be. I like the cute appearance of straps that are adjustable and tie into bows. To achieve this, I made 4 straps each 15cms in length.

This image shows how you will need to press your fabric. First press a 0.5cm seam allowance at either end of the fabric length. Go to your sewing machine and secure with the medium stitch. It is not necessary to back stitch at this step as the edges will be enclosed within the straps.

Then, fold the two outer lengths in to meet at the middle of the strap, and press. If you are finding it tricky to meet equally in the middle, first fold the fabric in half and press-- that way you have a crease in the middle of the fabric.
Fold the two halves onto one another so that now all raw edges are enclosed. Using your medium stitch length, sew close to the edge to secure the straps.

Pin your four straps evenly onto your bodice. Secure them well with your stitches. I chose to put the first seam going over the first row of stitching, and then closer to to top of the dress- remembering to do the back stitching.

To finish, turn your dress in the right way and blast the shirring with steam from your iron. This will cause the fabric to shrink in nicely.

And you're done! Other ways you can jazz up your creation is to put large buttons where the straps sit at the front and back. You can play around with your design to put that 'made by ME' touch to it. Then dress up your favourite girl! Great little outfit for the warmer weather, and the dress grows with them! It can be a top for a young girl, and again if you use a longer length of fabric, even do one for yourself! I know I will.... Yay :D

I really hope you enjoyed the tutorial, please tell me if you find anything confusing or if you have any questions at all! I've had fun putting the tutorial together, and I'd love to see anything you might make with it!

Cheers!

More Changes and a Tutorial to Come

Got myself a haircut today, a short one at that! It's the shortest it has ever been and it certainly feels different. I feel a little, but not a lot; Hipster... in a way. That very idea is odd. I had a couple of reasons for the change, the biggest one being that I've been colouring my hair since about 16 when my sister thought I'd be a great idea to bleach my hair! On and off since then my hair has been though various steps of colour and growing out. I've been biding my time for a while now, thinking "I'll get all the colour cut out when it's long enough". Finally impatient, I went with it. I'm finding it quite refreshing as I've never had hair this short.

My other half is making me laugh by saying I look like Vince of the Mighty Boosh. Silly male haha but it makes me laugh :D

Also, in other news! I am putting together a tutorial on how to make this:

It's a cute little shirred dress for a little girl. In fact, going to be giving it as a belated Christmas gift to a daughter of some friends of mine. In regards to the tutorial, I've taken all the photos, but need to edit them and write the words. I'm kind of excited as it is my first one. I hope to make others, infact a skirt like one worn by Nicole Richie is the next one I'm planning. Hopefully all goes well!

Cheerio then!

Only Online

Frustrated at the attempts I'd been making to open Zipped files on mylaptop with WinZip, I decided to uninstall it as the trial version had long expired and I had files I couldn't open on my computer. Here is how you can do it yourself...

First visit WinZip online:

From there, click on the link Download WinZip

Next, on "Get it Free"

Then "Get WinZip free with TrialPay"

The next thing you need to do is pick your preferred option for getting the free WinZip Standard, valued at $29.95. I chose the offer with Snapfish which allowed me toupload 20 of my own photos and have them printed free! Very cool (or so I thought). The only thing you need to pay with this offer is postage, which for the 20 photos was only $2.95. (woo, photos like my balloon dresses with a click of the mouse!) Trying to get the best value for money, I believe as far as things go, paydirt was found. Now I can un-Zip all the cool stuff.

But wait, there's more!!

Case in point; remember the Super Nintendo? Of course you do. Some years ago on a computer I'd downloaded a Super Nintendo Emulator for my computer. And with that, a Nintendo game called "Sailor Moon: Another Story". The greatest thing about that is..

A): I was too young to even know wait a Sailor Moon was when it was first released and
B): The game was never released in English.
C): There is more than one Sailor Moon game available!

Not only can you play the Sailor Moon games, but also classics like Super Mario Bros! Ultra Geeky Cool.

I wouldn't tease you with these possibilities without download links!

Visit http://fantasyanime.com/emuhelp/emulators.htm for a variety of different Emulators
Visit http://www.sailor-games.com/nintendo.html to find many different Sailor Moon Games

(I chose to go with Snes9X v1.52 for Windows.)

Getting things up-and-running is super easy, but don't forget to look at the Read Me files, or the helpful people who run the websites. Have fun and enjoy re-discovering old classics!

See-ya! Got some cool games to go play... :D

New Look, Pink Car

With the new year, I'd like to start things of with a fresh new blog makeover! I hope you like it. I played more with the ability to tweak Blogger's settings and am liking the cleaner look and feel.

Todays post is about making decisions, and celebrating pretty things. Late last year, I've had a couple of thoughts about where I'm going. I've decided I want to get there is style! I only got my driver's licence at 23 and brought my 1st (2nd hand) car six months later. I've decided to buy a new one this year! Hoping to have the finances prepared by the end of March, sticking to a (almost) strict no-spending policy.

^ This is my aim. The prices is right... and the colour? Definitely right. Time will tell if it's the actual car I buy, if my other half has his say! The car is a Suzuki Alto, and from my research into it, great value for money and one of the safest cars and least likely to break down, according to an elextrical engineer I visited. So what is not to love?! I'm trying to cut down on buying things I don't need.

Now on a that topic; this is what broke my policy:

They are gorgeous (hopefully genuine vintage) brooches that I most definately be wearing. The main instance will be when I wear my balloon twisting outfits for my balloon twisting business A Rainbow of Balloons. The price was very right though, and it would be almost impossible to make no purchases until the car is purchased, right?

Emma Pillsbury is my style icon, and until I can wear her clothes more mainstream, my outlet is my costumes I wear. I'd only love to wear those kind of outfits more often, but don't really have the reason to *sadface*.

As you can see, my new favourite brooch is used in the header design. I'd be happy to assist any fellow bloggers who may have an image they'd like to use if they'd like me to try making on for them? Drop me a line if interested!

That's it for now, until next time!

Happy New Year! 1/1/11 @ 11:00pm

Couldn't let the coolest day of the year go by without having a post to it! Of course I'm talking about 1/1/11 (11/11/11 might just be slightly more awesome)

As I sit here and type I am ridiculously sleepy and I know it is now my bedtime. But if I wait 2 more minutes, then it will be 11:00pm hehe. And so I am waiting a few moments before I hit 'post' and these are my sleep-deprived ramblings. Usually I don't feel like I've had a good night's sleep unless I have at least 8 and a half hours, that way I feel truly rested. I really don't know how people go on less. I get too grumpy. Do you ever have that feeling, oh I can't wait till nighttime to go back to sleep? Yep. Me too.

Anyways it is officially 11:00pm for me so goodnight! All the best to you for the New Year to follow!

Tonight's Post Brought to you by Hypno Kitties

Neko and Minette Valentina

Hypno kitties expect... Nay.. Demand your attention! Ever had that moment when you try to take photos of things and the cats get in the way? Of course you do. Every cat owner (slave in servitude) does, I'm sure!

If I don't even mention my slack posting you won't even notice. See? Nice 'n smooth. Thank you Hypno Kitties. Now we can move on!

Huh. Somehow the paragraph I'd prepared earlier quit... It just disappeared! Now I'll just retry it ... Something about I hope you had a great Christmas! I thought I'd share a Christmas saga with you. I was very lucky and spoilt and received an overlocker from my Sweetheart for Christmas. I can't wait to use it, I haven't much experience with one and I look forward to discovering its magical goodness! Now a tale about the sewing machine cabinet... It was a promised gift from my Sweetie and his parents for Christmas 08, purchased in the June 09 sales and finally assembled in August 10. I was also lucky enough to get a sewing machine in 08 from my parents and sister. It's great to have a workstation where I can keep everything together and hopefully have creative things happen.

The chain is something cute I threw together with my jewellery making supplies to make sure I don't lose the key to the lock! I used some beads I'd gotten from my mother, as well as the little heart shaped charm. I love that I can use something from my family's past a repurpose it to something new! The charm with the gem is taken from a necklace I took apart, brought at the Darwin Show a few years ago and never worn, haha!

Anyways, so I was saying...

I've been trying to get somewhat organised and have proper places for my sewing goodies, my packets of balloons, jewellery making supplies and general 'stuff'... My Sweetie tolerates me to have the spare room as my creative space. But absolutely no photos of that work environment until it finally gets cleaned. So needs a makeover haha! So the room is basically my girl cave (cosplay costumes hang in the cupboard!), which is great as I need oodles of room. My stuff is just to unrestrained. I want to have less stuff about that I don't use/need but getting rid of it is the hassle. Do I smell a New Years Resolution (those usually fail methinks though!)

So hopefully that was worth the rate and I'll even see if I can squeeze out one new post for the last day of 2010 tomorrow. If I don't (kinda likely!), see you in the New Year!
